In Japanese, they don’t say “moon,” they say “tsuki,” which literally translates to “moon,” and I think that’s how language works.
Ok this post kills me every time I see it because it’s a variation of the in x language we don’t say “I love you,” we say “xyz” instead meme.
But see: Natsume Soseki, a famous Japanese novelist, translated “I love you” as “the moon is beautiful” saying that for a Japanese person, it will suffice.
While directly translated as “The Moon is Beautiful”, the phrase “Tsuki ga Kirei Desu ne.“ (月が綺麗ですね。, lit. “The Moon is Beautiful, Isn’t it?”) is a famous Japanese way to say “I love you”. The phrase was translated by Meiji-era novelist and teacher Natsume Sōseki since he believed that two people in love do not need direct words to convey their feelings. (Wikipedia)
Japanese is considered a graceful language (or as I like to say, indirect to the point you’re dancing in circles around each other) and the explanation for this translation goes:

But most of all the “It’s beautiful” part.
So… The moon is beautiful is I love you. Because two people looking at the same thing connect to each other.
If we extend this meaning to the moonlight, Will says “It really does look black in the moonlight… It’s beautiful.”
The blood illuminated by this moonlight is beautiful = I love you.
Because I’m seeing what you’re seeing, we’re connected.
Also… Another example: Some of our stars will always be the same. We see the same stars, we’re connected. I love you.
We’re conjoined. I love you.
In how many ways they say I love you to each other?

okay, but what about –“the moon is beautiful” = I love you, and then
“it really does look black in the moonlight”, as… it’s a dark love (hello, hugh! ) or maybe – compared with love (what we usually define as love) what they feel is a dark (dirty, dangerous, negative, unhealthy) thing?or us it more will seeing that this is like the direct opposite of love.
or just that it’s more intense than what he feels as love for Molly… 🤔

I got through two sentences of this post and was like….you’ve gotta be fucking kidding me. 😂
“It really does look black in the moonlight” should actually be “I love you, too,” because it is Hannibal who first puts forth the idea of blood looking black in the moonlight while analyzing Red Dragon. He tells Will that the “pilgrim” might want privacy when he kills because he wishes to go naked under the moon and see himself, and that’s when Hannibal mentions how blood looks black in the moonlight.
Hannibal is saying that this idea of blood in the moonlight is beautiful, knowing how Will’s mind works–knowing that Will can and eventually will see himself in black-moonlight blood. This is Hannibal’s idea of beauty offered to Will on a silver platter, one of his many ways of saying “I love you, Will, you nugget.”
When Will sees blood on himself, that he and Hannibal put there, he offered back to Hannibal the same thought. “It really does look black in the moonlight” as his agreement of, “Yes, it is beautiful, and I love you too even though I am a brainless nugget.”
